Spooky Camping Themed Book Activity Freebie

We were lucky enough to have Tom Birdseye the author of OH YEAH visit our school a few years ago. His books are super fun and I also highly suggest checking out his book Look Out Jack! The Giant is Back, a sequel to Jack and the Beanstalk.

The book OH YEAH  is about two boys who are spending the night in their backyard camping in a tent. They talk about how they are not scared and then they hear a noise. They think the noise might be big hairy, kid eating monsters that only come out at night. To show they are brave they even leave their favorite stuffed animals by the tree out in the yard and then the more they hear the noise they start to worry about their stuffed animals. The noise ends of being their dog in the bushes.

After reading the story to my class we made these fun monster faces that are a part of a Spooky Eyes Freebie in my Teachers Pay Teachers Store. Download the patterns in the Spooky Eyes set and use the Monster Faces patterns. Cut construction paper to the sizes written on the construction paper picture above. (It  took me about 10-15 minutes to get paper cut. I had the pattens made ahead of time.) What worked really well in my classroom was to have the patterns at a table in the classroom that is separate from their desks. I had about 6 students working at the table at a time. The others were at their seats working on something else or even writing their Once I heard a noise responses. As soon as one student got done tracing their patterns they took them to their desks to cut them out and glue their monster together. Then I sent another student in their place to trace their patterns. I had all 22 students done tracing in 30 minutes. Most of them had their monsters glued together in that time also. There were a few students that were that last tracers that needed a little extra time to finish.

Then students wrote about a time they heard a noise. Some students wrote about real noises they heard that scared them and others made up a time they heard a noise. You can get the writing template: Once I heard a noise… free here.

Some other things students could write about after reading this book are; their favorite stuffed animal,  camping with a friend, sleeping in a tent, camping in the backyard, a time when they were scared, or a time when they were brave.
