I am super excited to share with you my Class Dojo classroom behavior management system set. This system is a great way to manage students behavior.

Class Dojo as a Behavioral Management system:

In the past I have used the stop light system for behavior management which you can read all about on my post here.  The second half of the year I always did a ticket system to give kids a fresh start and something a little different to motivate them. Students could earn tickets to spend at a ticket store which included candy, stickers, small toys left over from when my own kids were little, small toys brought in by students, leftovers from class parties, etc.

Getting Started

I start the year with booklets I created for each student and you can access them here.

How it works

Every Friday students are allowed to cash in or spend their points by choosing something from their booklet. (This takes about 15 minutes). If students had any extra points they were put into a saving account. (Which is just a spreadsheet on paper where I keep track of what they don’t spend.) If students want to save their points up for a bigger prize I  just write their points down on the paper. Every Friday I reset all the students bubbles to zero. On Friday’s Cash In Day I sit at a table with the possible prizes from the booklet and call students back in small groups while the rest of the class practices a skill at their seats. When students earned a prize they stamped it with one of my stamps and then they knew they had used that prize and next time they needed to pick another one. I sometime star their booklet with colored pens if we don’t have time for stamps. Once their booklets are getting pretty filled up I let them start doing prizes over.  There are some prizes they weren’t allowed to do again so you can always have that as an option. I usually always let them pick candy, pencils, or stickers because I have plenty of those.

Some prizes that didn’t work well for me- laminate something special. It took much more of my teacher time than I had planned for it to take. I also removed the eat in the classroom, because I really need to have my lunchtime with adults and maybe I will have another way they can earn lunch in the room as a class.

Why Class Dojo for classroom management? I love that parents can view their child’s behavior everyday. I also use class dojo messaging to text parents back and forth without having to give out my personal number. There is a record of all behavior good and bad if I need for reporting for a parent conference or phone call. Students love using Class Dojo. It is easy for me to tap a student and give or take away a point. I have this set up on my phone so I can take it around the school with me when we are walking in the halls. Typically I give points rather than take away but sometimes if a child has been warned a few times I will take away a point.

Challenges: The main challenge I found with using it is students wanting to know their points but now students can access the app on their own iPad and check their progress there each week.

Successes: Students and parents loved using it. It works so much easier than giving tickets. No tickets are lost or stolen. I love being able to monitor behavior in the hall with my iPhone. We often have a mystery walker picked by the random picker on Class Dojo and they earn points when we get to the destination we are traveling too if they have been following the rules.  Sometimes the whole class will be a mystery walker and I select them all and then unselect if they are not following the rules. Class Dojo seemed to save me time writing out notes to parents.

Favorite Prizes

Students favorite prizes are changing their avatars, going without shoes, going to special class a few minutes early and tell teacher we were coming, 10 minutes of free iPad time, and picking 2 lunch buddies. None of these prize favorites cost me any money!!:) Lunch buddies has been the biggest hit over the years. We have 5 classes in second grade and students typically sit with their class but with this prize they are allowed to pick students from any other 2nd grade class to sit with them in the cafeteria.

Mid Year Change

I find that after Christmas Break it is fun to change up the behavior system to something a little different. I’ve done this almost every year I have taught and it has always worked well. The second half of the year we have the Class Dojo points store. Their points are used to purchase prizes, they can also put points in savings or spend all their points or spend some points and save the rest. Each point is worth 1 cent. Prizes include things like pencils, candy, stickers and other little inexpensive items. I have had parents donate things for the store in the past or if my children at home outgrow a small toy or token it is then added to the Dojo Store. This store takes about 1/2 hour and I only do it every other Friday. While kids are shopping at the store others are working at their desks on iPad skills or some other work that needs done. Kids love it and it works well with the Dojo Points. Just like the booklets I reset bubbles every other Friday. I also give them fake paper coins I have for math practice and they actually work on some math skills for counting money while they shop. So if they have 15 points they get 15 cents and then after they are done shopping if they did not spend all their money I will have them count up their money and tell me how much to put on their savings account balance.

  1. I really love you post! I am so excited there is clipart we can use right from Class Dojo – I didn't know that! I also love your reward booklet! Thank you so much for providing me with more ways on how to use Class Dojo in my classroom 🙂

  2. Great post! I use Class DoJo but don't have a reward system tied to it. I like the booklet idea with so many privileges they can earn. I'm excited to try something similar next year. 🙂

  3. Thanks for this post! I have a couple of questions I was hoping you could answer! First of all how did you add extra icons for positive behavior and behavior that needs work? Also, are your trading cards available? I think my students would love those!

    Thanks so much!

    1. If you goto your class and click settings in the top right hand corner then click edit class, then click behaviors at the top and you can add or delete or rename behaviors here. The trading cards are unavailable right now because the company Class Dojo wants their items on teachers pay teachers to be free. Thanks for inquiring.
