Well Mother’s Day is just around the corner and here’s a inexpensive way for students to make wonderful flowers for their mothers. It’s quick and easy for student to paint, and they feel so proud of the finished product to take home. I found the original idea in a Family Fun magazine many years ago and tweaked it a little to make it easy for 2nd graders to do. I have them make 2 flowers for their mother and then an Acrostic Poem to go with it. This also works well if they have a step parent and want to give one of the flowers to them too.
If you have ipads you could also use this free Acrostic Poem app and have them print out paper and for their mother. I like to do the old fashion hand written ones because I think it is nice as a mother to look back on my child’s handwriting and I hope the mothers of my students feel the same way.
Step ONE
Gather supplies:
1. toilet paper roll tubes
You will need 2 toilet paper rolls per student. I usually gather these throughout the year but students can also bring them to school.
2. BBQ skewers
You can usually find these at a local grocery store or Walmart.
3. Rulers
4. Scissors
5. Green Construction Paper
6. Tissue Paper of various colors
7. Paint
8. Old File Folder to cut leaf shaped patterns for students to trace
9. Glue
Glue for gluing leaves to to BBQ skewers
10. Glue Gun
Glueing Tissue paper into flowers
